Little Portion Farm is a ministry of the Franciscan Friars Conventual focused on providing fresh food to those in need while using sustainable farming methods. The 3-acre farm is intended to function as an ecosystem, with a diversity of plants and habitats to support the life of this “little portion” of creation. In addition to common annual crops, the farm includes sections of perennial plants, as well as native flowering plants to attract pollinators and other beneficial insects. As the food harvested from the farm is donated to the Franciscan Center in Baltimore, the overarching mission of this ministry is, using the words of Pope Francis, to “hear both the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor.”

Since 2019, our first growing season, we have harvested and donated over 45,000 pounds of fresh organic produce to those in need in Baltimore. The majority of our food goes to the Franciscan Center of Baltimore to be used in their meal program, which served over 300,000 meals in 2021 alone.
In 2022, we hope to…

  • Begin planting our fruit orchard/food forest, which will eventually have around 60 trees and 120 shrubs
  • Plant additional rows in our perennial section, likely including blueberries, bush cherries, grapes, and possibly more
  • Plant additional wildflower gardens to attract beneficial insects and pollinators
  • Plant a hedgerow around the farm’s fence line to serve as a windbreak and provide habitat for birds and insects
  • Purchase more irrigation supplies for our expansion
  • Hire an assistant to help Farmer Matt manage on and off-farm tasks

In our 2021 year-end campaign, we hope to raise $15,000 to help with this expansion and operate the farm next year. Our continued growth will only be possible with your generous support. Our commitment to donating 100% of our produce means we rely greatly on your generosity for the resources we need to be successful. May God bless you and thank you for supporting our ministry!

Special sponsorships available:

$250 - Sponsor a fruit tree (60 sponsorships available)
On the north side of the farm we have begun preparing ground for our fruit orchard or “food forest.” These 12 rows will be planted with around 60 fruit trees in total. In between the trees, we plan to plant smaller shrubs and perennials, in order to fill in multiple ecological niches. Your donation will cover the cost of the tree, shipping (if needed), compost and additional supplies to support the growth and health of the tree, and a small sign at the base of the tree acknowledging your donation (e.g. “In memory of ...”, “A gift from …” ). After your donation, we will reach out to you so you can let us know what you would like printed. Note: Most trees will be young and will need several years before fruiting.
$1,000 - Sponsor a wildflower garden (5 sponsorships available - see numbered areas in map below)
St. Francis of Assisi believed that the edges of gardens should be left “undug, so that in their season the greenness of the grass and the beauty of flowers may proclaim the beauty of the Father of all.” Inspired by this idea, we have set aside several areas for native wildflower gardens throughout the farm, both to provide habitat for pollinators and beneficial insects, but also to create spaces where visitors can contemplate creation. We have planted two wildflower gardens on the farm by scattering seed, but we hope to plant additional areas with transplants or “plug plants.” While more expensive than seed, we hope this method will ultimately be more successful and lead to a fuller garden of wildflowers with less weeds. Your donation will cover the cost of the native wildflower plug plants, shipping (if needed), a small handmade wooden bench within the garden, and a sign on the bench acknowledging your donation (e.g. “In memory of ...”, “A gift from …”). After your donation, we will reach out to you so you can let us know what you would like printed on the sign.
Note: We very much hope to make these plantings in 2022, but it is possible some plantings could be delayed due to availability of nursery stock or other factors.
